Confessions of a Bride-To-Be #18: Do Not Remove Your Shoes

My Mom just told me that the bride is not supposed to remove her shoes when she steps into the groom’s place and can only do so when she returns home.

WHAT!?!

Not like I mind the extra height but wouldn’t it be weird if everyone else has their shoes off? What about the groom? Is he expected to keep his shoes on too?

Has anyone heard of/adhered to this custom?

  1. Yup! I didn't take off my shoes... and it actually made sense not to, because with the gown on, it was just more convenient to keep the shoes on. I don't remember about my hubby. And I just checked my brother-in-law's wedding photos, and he didn't take his shoes off.

  2. oooh not heard of this, i changed my white shoes to champagne ones when i changed into the kua at my husband's place. the only reason that i've heard regarding why brides don't take off shoes is it's too difficult to take them off in a poufy dress...

  3. Not sure if it is more of a custom than a matter of convenience. I think it was told to me by my photographer and friends.

Guess it would be anti climax for the bride to stop and take off her shoes when making an entrance?

  5. Hersheys - Yah i think it's more convenient. I'm just not used to walking indoors in shoes haha.

thepleasuremonger - I'm only wearing my cheongsam in the morning, so no issue with the poufy dress. But my Aldo heels are strappy and tough to remove, so i guess i won't mind not taking them off.

    Lin - Anti climax indeed!

backfullcircle - I think in my case it'd be breaking my promise to my Mom (to keep the shoes on) haha!

  6. Yes, I've heard of this! In fact, my MIL repeated this instruction a million times to us to KEEP YOUR SHOES ON. It felt quite liberating to be the only ones clomping around the house with shoes on. Not everyday you get the privilege eh? :)
